As California Prepares to Vote on AUMA, Cultivators Seek Ways to Cut Costs and Streamline Operations in the Nation’s Largest Medical Marijuana Market

Leading cultivation experts at urban-gro to speak at multiple industry conferences in the Golden State in the coming months

Sonoma County, Calif.  (September 29, 2016) – California’s Adult Use of Marijuana Act (AUMA) vote is likely the most closely watched marijuana industry vote in November, and if the Golden State votes to legalize adult use, the move would put unprecedented pressure on the Federal Government to reform Cannabis laws. urban-gro, the product solutions expert for the commercial Cannabis cultivator, provides services and products to the state’s cultivators. Vice President of Cultivation Technologies J. Chandler notes that in light of the passage of sweeping statewide regulations in 2015 that will take effect by 2018, the cost of doing business will increase, making it all the more critical to get production costs down.

Additionally, California faces unique challenges in terms of water usage and energy efficiency. urban-gro’s team of Cultivation Technologists helps design water and wastewater treatment systems by analyzing many aspects of source water to develop cost-effective pretreatment solutions. urban-gro also designs custom biological wastewater treatment systems to reduce the levels of salts and BODs before emission to the sewer.

“Because California has some of the biggest challenges in terms of water resources and environmental regulations, if adult use is legalized, it will be more important than ever that every serious cultivator look at efficiencies of operation in fertigation, integrated pest management, lighting and building controls,” Chandler said. urban-gro’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) helps growers achieve healthy, pest-free crops through the use of biological controls, cultural management, chemical control and exclusion. Chandler is the Cannabis industry’s only Certified Crop Advisor.

Whether California cultivators are growing indoors or utilizing a greenhouse, it is essential to provide the optimal light levels for each flower state. This may mean utilizing a mix of HPS and LED horticulture fixtures. Earlier this year, urban-gro announced the availability of HortiLED, a new line of LED lighting for the Cannabis market custom engineered to deliver optimum lighting performance for specific indoor and greenhouse Cannabis cultivations.

“California has the potential to have the largest marijuana industry in the United States and will have a huge influence on legalization around the country,” Chandler said. “Now it’s up to cultivators to make sure they are using the best agricultural practices to ensure their products are high quality, safe and affordable.”

Serving as the Vice President of Cultivation Technologies, Chandler has a passion for assisting growers in efficiently producing high-quality horticultural crops. He has been managing and consulting for large-scale organic vegetable farms and greenhouses, as well as Cannabis production facilities since his graduation from Texas A&M with a Bachelor of Science in Production Horticulture in 2003. Chandler has a wide breadth of knowledge of integrated pest management, fertility and automation in large-scale operations. After three years as Director of Cultivation for a highly awarded Denver dispensary, he successfully launched Cannabis IPM Solutions in 2014. In 2015, urban-gro brought him on board to do the same for their customers.

Chandler is a Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) by the California CCA Board. The CCA certification program was established in 1992 by the American Society of Agronomy to provide a benchmark for practicing agronomy professionals in the United States and Canada. Chandler is also certified in Maryland’s Nutrient Management Program, which trains and certifies qualified applicants to provide crop producers with nutrient management plans that maximize crop yields while minimizing nutrient losses to the environment.

AUMA would allow adults 21 years and older to possess up to one ounce of marijuana; regulate and tax the production, manufacture, and sale of marijuana for adult use; and rewrite criminal penalties so as to reduce the most common marijuana felonies to misdemeanors and allow prior offenders to petition for reduced charges.

urban-gro experts will participate at some of the biggest events in the California Cannabis industry, including Cultivating Community hosted by the Sonoma County Growers Alliance on Sept. 30; the NCIA Q4 Caucus in Long Beach on Oct. 25; the San Diego Cannabis Growers Conference on Oct. 29; the Third Native American Marijuana Conference in Alpine on Dec. 5-6; Cannacon Santa Rosa April 20-22, 2017; and NCIA Oakland June 12-14, 2017.
