This four-story brick and concrete structure was erected in 1971 and has undergone only minor changes since it was built. With a small budget relative to the building area, it was clear from inception that building a consensus within the user groups and setting priorities based on a holistic view of ideal functionality was of primary importance. Through an intensive programming and goal-setting exercise, the project team distilled two main objectives: 1) Master plan the entire facility to produce a roadmap which would transform the building functionally into a modern university library in phases and 2) Enhance the user experience by consolidating services and creating distinct and varied spaces for student interaction, socialization, group study and quiet study. The resulting plan relocated special collections and archives to the lowest level and providing high density storage to decrease the footprint while increasing spatial efficiency. The vacated space was filled with stacks from lower floors which in turn made room for co-located tutoring spaces as requested by student representatives.

The project also includes ADA and life safety upgrades as well as full replacement of mechanical systems, necessitating provisions for temporary air conditioning and humidity controls.
