2017 Innovation Award for Adaptive Reuse from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia
Building on the success of the inspiring renovation of adjacent Howard Hall, our design team was selected to renovate this 24,000 sf 1960’s science building which had undergone various interior modifications and retrofits over the decades. The building circulation was circuitous and cramped. Many spaces had no windows and were only accessible from exterior corridors.
The design team, working collaboratively with faculty and facilities managers, created a new layout to address the needs for flexible classrooms, mobile computer labs, offices, student-professor meeting areas, and renovation of the existing 80-seat auditorium. The new entry and wide corridors lead to a central stair with lounge seating. The double-height space, including roof clerestory, provide ample daylight for the administrative suites, break room and conference rooms. The design incorporates ADA upgrades such as a new elevator, HVAC and electrical/data, additional windows, finishes throughout, and a new sprinkler system.
